AFTER strong protests and condemnation, Haryana’s Chief Minister has put on hold its order asking athletes it employs to deposit a third of their income from their professional assignments or commercial endorsements to its sports council to support the development of sports in the state.

CM Manohar Lal Khattar said he had asked for the file to be shown to him and till then the notification has been put on hold.

A notification issued by the state government in April had said that “in case the sportsperson is treated on-duty while taking part in professional sports or commercial endorsements, the full income earned by the sportsperson will be deposited with the Haryana State Council”.

Reactions to the government order had been sharp and swift with some of Haryana’s top sportspersons condemning the order.

“Does the government even realize how much of hard work a sportsperson puts in? How can they ask for one-third of the income?” said wrestler Babita Phogat.

Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar said that the government should have taken the inputs of senior sportspersons before coming out with the order. “This will affect the morale of sportspersons & might affect their performance as well,” Kumar said.
