Majerhat Bridge in Kolkata Collapses A portion of the bridge collapsed during peak traffic hours

THE Majerhat bridge in South Kolkata collapsed this evening trapping several people and vehicles in its debris and under the bridge, first visuals broadcast by television channels showed.

Local residents and first responders are on the scene and providing rescue and relief help. Officials say there could be casualties as some people are still trapped.

State Minister Fahad Hakim said that six people have been taken to the hospital.

A portion of the 40-year-old Majerhat bridge collapsed during peak traffic hours and photos posted on Twitter by eyewitnesses showed people lying injured amongst damaged cars, a bus and several two-wheelers.

The Army is not officially part of the rescue and relief operations but since their base is very close, their medical unit was sent for immediate help, news agency ANI reported.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is in Darjeeling, has reacted by saying “we are very worried. We are receiving information from the rescue team on ground”.

“Our team is focused on relief and rescue work. Our priority is relief and rescue. Rest of the investigation will be done later,” Ms Banerjee told ANI.

The Majerhat bridge is built over the major Sealdah railway line and connects south Kolkata’s Behala area.

More details are awaited.
