Assam NRC Draft Released: Around 40 Lakh Left Out Provisions have been made for those who have been left out to make claims and raise objections beginning Aug 30 and till Sept 28

THE REGISTRAR General of India has released the final draft of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Guwahati, leaving out nearly 40 lakh people of the 3.29 crore who applied for citizenship.

“Two crore eighty nine lakhs, eighty three thousand six hundred and seventy seven people have been found eligible to be included in the National Register of Citizens”, NRC Coordinator of Assam was quoted saying by ANI.

With apprehensions about the legal status of those who have been left out rising, the Registrar General and the government are assuring people that this is just the draft and not the final list.

Provisions have been made for those who have been left out to make claims and raise objections beginning August 30 and till September 28.

The NRC list in Assam is being updated on directions and monitoring of the Supreme Court and in accordance of the Assam Accord signed on August 15, 1985.

The first draft of the NRC was released last year and had 1.9 crore names in the list.

The NRC exercise is being carried out to identify and root out illegal migrants primarily from Bangladesh after allegations of large-scale influx and illegal voting contributing to the changing demography were raised by political parties.

To register as a citizen, Assamese had to submit proof that they have been living in the state before March 24, 1971, a cut-off date strictly adhered to for the NRC list.

The state government and Central government have appealed to the people to maintain calm and order after the NRC was published and have made provisions for people to check their names online, via SMS and even offline through Sewa Kendras.
