THE DELHI Patiala House Court has awarded the death penalty to Yashpal Singh who was convicted for killing two men in south Delhi’s Mahipalpur area during the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots. Another convict Naresh Sherawat has been sentenced to life.

A fine of Rs 35 lakh each has also been imposed on Singh and Sherawat. The court had found the two guilty in a hearing last week (Nov 15).

The verdict was pronounced by Additional Sessions Judge Ajay Pandey in a special session held in Tihar Jail on Tuesday. The hearing was moved to the jail premises due security concerns.

A total of 60 cases were reopened as part of a Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team to look at cases that were closed by the Delhi Police in 1994.
